As we dive into the heart (and heat) of summer, we hope your days are filled with sunshine, making memories with loved ones, and relaxation. This July is expected to be hot, according to the Farmer’s Almanac, which predicts temperatures will, on average, be hotter than normal for much of the United States. Whether traveling afar or staying close to home, practicing safe habits is a good idea when dealing with the heat. Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids (even before you feel thirsty) is key, but don’t forget to balance your water intake with electrolyte drinks, which give your body a boost of essential minerals and vitamins that can be depleted by heat. Check out these delicious fruit-infused water recipes to help you reach your hydration goals. You can also beat the heat by indulging in a cool treat on July 21st to celebrate National Ice Cream Day. This year will be the 40th anniversary of this “holiday.” In 1984, President Ronald Reagan declared the third Sunday of July as National Ice Cream Day. Get the scoop on some fun ice cream facts: - What’s the most popular flavor? Vanilla. Followed by chocolate, then cookies and cream.
- The ice cream cone was created around the turn of the 20th century and has two origin tales. The first cone was created in 1896 in New York City by an Italian immigrant, Italo Marchiony, and patented in 1903. Though Marchiony is credited with creating the first cone, another version of the concept took off during the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis. Ernest A. Hamwi was selling zalabis, a waffle-like pastry, at a booth next to an ice cream vendor. When the vendor ran out of bowls, Hamwi rolled his pastries into a cone to help serve the ice cream. Hamwi’s cones quickly became a success and helped inspire several cone-making businesses.
Independence Day falls on a Thursday this year, bringing an excuse for food, fun, friends, and, of course, fireworks. However, the 4th of July can be a downright scary – or even dangerous – holiday for our furry friends. (It’s no wonder July 5th is a busy day for local animal shelters!) Here are some ways you can keep pets safe during this festive season:
- Ensure pets are microchipped with their current names and contact information. Also, ensure they have a well-fitted collar with contact information either engraved on the collar itself or the tags.
- Leave pets at home and consider keeping them in a safe space during noisy celebrations. Close blinds and windows and turn on the radio or TV to drown out some of the noise outside.
- Get them out for exercise earlier during the day so they can burn energy and be more relaxed when the festivities begin later.
- Applying pressure or weight, such as an anti-anxiety wrap, can calm cats and dogs. Talk to your vet about more options for remedies to help reduce anxiety.
